By reading this blog you are taking me another step closer to my very own Dawn Wall summit and I thank you!

Last week Kevin Jorgeson and Tommy Caldwell became the first free-climbers to scale El Capitan’s Dawn Wall, a sheer slab of granite rising vertically for 2,953ft from the Yosemite National Park valley in California. They had spent 19 days hauling themselves up by their fingertips and against all the odds they finally reached the summit on 14 January.

What makes the feat even more special for me is that they had spent SEVEN years planning and experimenting on different routes before being ready to attempt the full climb! Even on the climb itself, they suffered setbacks, falls and injuries but they were so determined to succeed, that giving up was never an option.

I write about the subject of goals a lot and I make no excuse for doing so! Without a clearly defined set of goals you and your life are like a rudderless ship, totally at the mercy of external factors that you have no control over!

I hope therefore that you do have goals in your life? Real goals, big and ambitious goals that challenge and drive you; ones that even scare you just a little bit? My next question is this? Have you actually started on your journey to achieving your goal?

I meet many people with ambitious dreams but when I talk to them, they have yet to start! When I ask why the most common reasons are: lack of time, lack of skills or experience, personal circumstances and money! To me these are just excuses and it is often the case that the biggest barriers stopping most people starting are APATHY and FEAR!

You MUST fight off the apathy and the fear and to quote Nike “Just Do it!”

Two help me do this I remember two of my favourite quotes, which are: “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” (Confucius) and “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” (Lao-tzu).

Here is a personal example; I have the goal to be an internationally renowned author. As a ‘benchmark of success’ I am looking for one of my articles to be read by a global audience of 500,000 people!

With this goal in mind I wrote my first ever blog on the 24th September 2010 and thanks to the statistics available on WordPress I can tell you that a grand total of just 4 people read that first post!

I persevere and now publish my blogs via LinkedIn and here on my website. On LinkedIn my first post of 2015 has currently been read 829 times with 40 likes and 10 comments. Quite an improvement but still over 499,000 short of my benchmark! Am I concerned? No, I’m delighted at the progress. I see this goal as my personal ‘El Capitan’s Dawn Wall’ and whatever it takes, I will reach that summit!

I hope this post has inspired you to start your own climb? If already climbing, extra energy to continue! If you liked it please share it and please do leave comments.
